IT & e-Commerce for Global Competitiveness (MBASolvay) (2002-2004) Professor: Tawfik Jelassi (MBA ENPC Paris)
Teaching Assistant: Nicolas van Zeebroeck
Objectives: To help students and their organisation to gain business value from information technologies and to be among the winners in the new e-world.
Outline: We are in the midst of the 'information age' which is having a dramatic impact on the fundamental business and management principles of markets and organisations. The information revolution (resulting from the merger of computer and telecommunication technologies and the advent of the Internet) is enabling companies to radically alter core business processes and change the competitive balance in many industries.
Some organisations are today using the power of IT to shrink time and distance, while others are leveraging the same power to expand them (as in 24-hour global trading). The old hierarchical organisation is giving way to newer forms of flexible organisations and value-added chain networks. Every revolution is full of opportunities and pitfalls. Organisations which have understood the information revolution are capitalising on its potential to sustain strong leadership positions in their respective industries. At the same time, stories abound of companies which were successful in the past, but failed to see the changes wreaked by the information revolution and are struggling today.
The focus of the course is on business strategies and management approaches for leveraging the capabilities of IT and the Internet.
